Haute Chocolate

Arguably chocolate is one of the most desired treats among women. Few indulge, however, out of fear that it will go straight to their hips. Last Wednesday, the tables were turned as women hoped that the sweet confection would stay firmly on their hips, thighs and midsections—at the Chocolate Fashion Show. Dreamt up by Sylvie Douce and Francois Jeantet, the sweet runway show kicked off the 13th Annual Chocolate Show, a four-day spectacle which once again filled the streets of New York with the delicious smell of chocolate. Over 50 chocolatiers from all around the world, including famous chocolate veterans Jacques Torres, Francois Payard and Johnny Iuzzini of Jean-Georges and Bravo’s Top Chef: Just Desserts, exhibited their finest treats.

Decked to the nines in truffles and white chocolate pearls, models carefully sauntered down the runway to reveal the latest in culinary couture. Hosted by George Duran of TLC’s The Ultimate Cake Off, the show featured a bevy of famous faces from the fashion and culinary worlds alike. Billed as the most delicious show of the year, the offerings by these teams of designers and pastry chefs did not disappoint.

The event supported the Clean Ocean Action, an organization that aims to improve the water quality off the New York and New Jersey coasts. With nature as the main theme of the night, these designers had the hard job of “going green” and representing Mother Earth with chocolate. Zac Young from Top Chef: Just Desserts teamed up with designer Nicole Romano to create an outfit made entirely of bon-bons dusted with edible glitter.

One of the edible dresses was designed entirely by pastry chefs and worn not by a model but by a woman who has climbed Mt. Everest. Complete with wings and a 20-pound chocolate shell headpiece, Michael Plosky and Martin Howard dubbed their fifth chocolate couture creation Queen of The Sun. Kevin Christiana of Project Runway fame stated that one of the hardest things about designing with chocolate is that, unlike fabric, it melts; but the designers who participated succeeded magnificently.
