Model Moment: The Rise of Tao

The fashion industry runs through models faster than it does trends which makes it hard to remember exactly who’s who. There are always a special few who rise to the top; most recent big names include Sasha Pivovarova, Chanel Iman, Agnes Deyn, and Raquel Zimmerman. I first noticed the Japanese Tao Okamoto when she was featured in the Ralph Lauren Fall/Winter ’09 ad campaign. She was 22 at the time and I thought that her presence in that ad was soft, yet powerful. Her significance as an Asian model also struck me, especially in the context of an “all-American” like Ralph Lauren. While Asian models are becoming more common on the runway, they are not as commonly used in print and editorial work.
