Chanel Fine Jewelry: A Feather in Your Cap—Or Hair, Or Around Your Neck

Given the gossamer lightness of some of the dresses Karl Lagerfeld came up with for Chanel haute couture this week—specifically, all those exquisite midi-length looks in navy lace or tulle—it’s fitting the house has floated the idea of the feather as the leitmotif of its latest fine jewelry collection. The diamond feather pin Coco Chanel designed in 1932 was the starting point, and her original design has been re-editioned by the house; it’s designed to pin into the hair, on the shoulder, at the waist.

Chanel showed her version in her apartment on marcel-waved dummy heads, the kind of thing that you’d see gracing the salons of the Fekkais of the thirties. Back in the day, that was considered shocking. Now the idea wouldn’t ruffle any feathers, but those jeweled plumes haven’t at least lost any of their sparkle—as this Plume necklace, top, in 18kt white gold, set with two pear cut 6.5 and 3.5 carat diamonds, and with 446 round cut and 159 baguette cut diamonds ably demonstrates.
