Marilyn Monroe’s Gown Goes For $314,000 Plus At Auction

It’s not even the most memorable dress Marilyn Monroe ever wore on screen–that would be the famously billowing white number from The Seven Year Itch, natch–but the pink strapless gown worn by the starlet in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes just fetched a whopping $314,000 at auction.

The “Profiles in History” auction that took place over the weekend in Los Angeles was filled with iconic props from the silver screen, including the bottomless handbag Julie Andrews toted in Mary Poppins and the Wicked Witch of the West’s hat from The Wizard of Oz, but it was the candy-colored gown that Marilyn wore while singing “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend” that sent the bidding crowd into a frenzy. According to The Telegraph, “The outfit, worn by the star as the gold-digging Lorelei Lee in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, topped its expected price of £170,000 [about $251,000].”
