Aleksandar Skoric for Zoran Dobric

What makes a designer like Toronto’s Zoran Dobric, known for hand-painting each of his mineral-hued prints, want to work with another artist for the first time?

“Well,” says Dobric, quite seriously, “Saša obviously has really good triangle skills.”

Saša is short for Aleksandar Skoric, a 35-year-old Calgarian who moved to Tokyo in 2004 to make and teach art. A friend of Dobric’s for 10-odd years, he’s done logos, web and packaging graphics for the designer since 2005.

Iman Wants Models With Personality

The supermodel Iman believes modern models should have more personality.

The fact that young models aren’t asked for opinion when clothing or makeup is chosen for them disappoints Iman. She thinks designers and models need to work more closely.

The supermodel – who was named Fashion Icon of the Year at 2010 CFDA Awards – said:

In my day it was, ‘Do you like that? Would you wear it that way?’ You could be your own person. And nobody walked the same way on the runway. Don’t get me wrong, there are great girls today. But they have lost that role, of collaborating with the designers. There is not that relationship anymore.”

The 55-year-old beauty felt very flattered when she was given the award and said she would agree to be dressed by young designer Alexander Wang.

She told the New York Times newspaper:

The award came as a surprise but it does the ego good. I plane to take Alexander up on his offer to dress me now!”

Young love: Storia d’ amour by Kalle Gustafsson

Some photographers just know how to create a story. Kalle Gustafsson is, without a doubt, one of them. This pictorial from Shufti magazine is perfection in its every frame. The vintage quality and the European setting give it a Roman Holiday feel and it’s a summer of love that leaves you wishing you were there in that golden moment.

A New Twist on the Braid Trend

“The inspiration was Anna Karina, the model-slash-actress from the ‘60s who played muse to director Jean-Luc Godard,” says Jason Wu of his resort 2011 collection. “She was really chic and had this great French gamine style.” As for the accompanying hairdo, Wu says, “It’s a girl who just presses her hair back and does a braid herself—I wanted it to be effortless and airy.”

Trend: The Maxi Skirt

The maxi skirt may be one of the most dramatic of all trends this upcoming fall with its floor skimming length and graceful draping.

Many of the fall runways featured maxi skirts in all different types of prints, colors, and textures, making them the centerpiece of an entire outfit.

The best part about the maxi skirt is that it only requires a few easy pieces to create a show-stopping look.

Michael Kors featured one in an expensive looking fabric infused with metallic threading for a standout light-reflecting effect.

A skirt like this is so statement-making on its own that it only needs a simple knit sweater and beanie to complete the look. The maxi skirt is all about luxury this upcoming season and it is dying to be the center of attention, so keep everything else basic.

Maxi skirts also look good covered in exotic prints or an all over rich color.

At Dries van Noten, a model wore a silky purple maxi skirt with tropical influences, creating a vibrant juxtaposition with everything that is stereotypically fall. A maxi skirt splashed with vivid hues call for more subtle and utilitarian counterparts such as a slouchy t-shirt in a natural color like khaki, beige, gray, or brown.

The Olsen sister’s got the entire concept of simplicity in the city spot on with their most recent collection of The Row that highlighted the easiness and minimalism of the basic black maxi skirt. The key to updating an all black look is to work with edgy and sleek textures for contrast and added dimension. Pile on sheer silk blouses that billow in the front, satiny blazers, leather gloves, reptile-printed purses, and sleek low slung belts with your black maxi skirt for an ensemble that is utterly chic.

Daily discovery: the caramel boot

I’m finding it hard to fault these Reiss leather ankle boots. They come in an edible caramel leather; the shape is beautiful and the heel height tall enough to look great, but small enough to be practical. And the buckle detail add some uniqueness.
