The Verdict’s In: Vogue’s Editors on Their Perfect Fall Pants

Wave goodbye to the novelty pant: This fall, trousers are a much more serious affair. “We’ve gone through a cycle of ironic pants with more conceptual shapes,” says Fashion Market/Accessories Director Virginia Smith, “but this season things are more streamlined, with styles that elongate the leg.” Gone are the days when nobody would blink when your crotch met your ankles or your waistline rose to your chest. Now, says Smith, “it’s about looking good rather than making a statement.” And the styles that fall into that category? Flared leg, boot-leg, straight leg, and (still) a few superslim shapes. There’s an overriding definitive nod to the seventies (which continues through to resort 2011, and which Jacquelyn Jablonski, above, was already wearing during the Paris shows this past March), with a touch of the nineties thrown in. Senior Accessories Editor Filipa Fino has already cleared out closet space for this fall staple. “Boot-leg is the new silhouette,” she says. “Meet your new skinny jean!” Here, fourteen women who work at Vogue highlight their favorites.

Fashion Challenge: Wear Multiple Bright Colors Together

Okay, I know what some of you might be thinking: “What? This is hardly a challenge!!”

I’m probably preaching to the choir here (after all, you guys are pretty stylish), but you’d be surprised how many college-aged girls are afraid to experiment with color. For example, a few months ago, a friend and I were getting ready for a night out and I suggested she wear turquoise stilettos with her deep plum colored dress — let’s just say you wouldn’t believe the look of horror she gave me!

So for this week’s challenge, go through your closet and find the most colorful pieces you own, and think about which color pairings complement each other. Summer is the perfect time to experiment with loud outfits, so go crazy and have fun! Are you ready to take on this challenge?

Tips and Tricks for Mixing Bright Colors

Vibrant jewel-tone colors look great together–some of my favorite color combos include yellow and turquoise, hot pink and purple, and royal blue with electric blue.

Consider adding color with your accessories. Bright clutches, turquoise or coral jewelry, kaleidoscopic scarves, and candy-colored shoes are versatile pieces that will add pop to your look.

Makeup is another great way to experiment with color: Purple eyeliner and hot pink lip gloss are two of my favorite ways to experiment with bold hues!

Be careful with the number of colors you mix at once. Wearing three or even four colors at once can create an incredible look, but I recommend stopping there. Mix five or more colors and you’ll risk looking like a rainbow explosion (and not in a good way)!

We’ve already published tips and tool recommendations to help you recreate these designs, but if you’ve been born with two left hands, we’ve also got a list of experts in 5 major cities to do ‘em for you. Whether you like ‘em flashy or classy, click through for a dose of nail-spiration.

Christian Dior – Shanghai Dreamers : Quentin Shih

Remember the beautiful series of photographs, tiitled “Stranger in the Glass Box“, Dior collaborated with Chinese photographer Quentin Shih to produce back in 2008 (see here)? Well, it’s time for round-two. This summer, for the reopening of the Dior boutique in Shanghai, the house of Dior called upon Shih once again to produce a series of images, using the last couture collection, that would be displayed in the boutiques windows.

Shih plays with surreal beauty and creates oil painting-style compositions by retouching his subjects and in this case using one Chinese stereotype and repeating it in a pattern to reinforce the rigor and uniformity of Chinese mass culture.

The Timeless Style of Audrey Hepburn

Model, actress, mother, activist – Audrey Hepburn was, of course, all of these things.  But many remember her best as a fashion icon whose individual style is still as fresh and modern today as it was in her heyday.  Of course, it helped to have someone like Hubert de Givenchy as a good friend and collaborator.  Her trademark little black dresses, trim capris, ballet flats, pearls, and black turtlenecks are still classic wardrobe staples we all rely on.  Walk into any store, high- or low-end, and you can still see Hepburn’s thumbprint on the fashion world – these chic basics are still in high demand.  Although she was more concerned with the state of the world than the state of fashion, I think she would appreciate that her fashion legacy has endured.  Want to get her chic, sophisticated look?  Try these pieces that embody Hepburn’s (and Holly Golightly’s) spirit…

Mona Johannesson: soft retro styling

An exercise in retro ladylike glamour, with ’60s full skirts and adorable soft styling, this pictorial from Elle Sweden has us smitten. Note how well an understated knit and slouched down pair of socks in heels can tone down an otherwise glamorously vintage look.

This style is perfect if you want to add a little edge to your cutoffs or a girly dress now, and for pairing with all your cozy stuff later.

Freja Beha Erichsen For MaxMara Fall 2010 Ad Campaign

There is nothing feminine about MaxMara Fall/ Winter 2010/ 2011 collection and this explains why Freja Beha Erichsen was chosen to promote it through the ad campaign. She looks just right for military coats, skirts from coarse fabrics and leather trousers.

Black-and-white pictures of MaxMara Fall 2010 ad campaign and Freja Beha Erichsen wearing pretty masculine clothing remind me of Civil War times when good garments were characterized by the warmth and comfort they provided to the wearer.
