The Verdict’s In: Vogue’s Editors on Their Perfect Fall Pants

Wave goodbye to the novelty pant: This fall, trousers are a much more serious affair. “We’ve gone through a cycle of ironic pants with more conceptual shapes,” says Fashion Market/Accessories Director Virginia Smith, “but this season things are more streamlined, with styles that elongate the leg.” Gone are the days when nobody would blink when your crotch met your ankles or your waistline rose to your chest. Now, says Smith, “it’s about looking good rather than making a statement.” And the styles that fall into that category? Flared leg, boot-leg, straight leg, and (still) a few superslim shapes. There’s an overriding definitive nod to the seventies (which continues through to resort 2011, and which Jacquelyn Jablonski, above, was already wearing during the Paris shows this past March), with a touch of the nineties thrown in. Senior Accessories Editor Filipa Fino has already cleared out closet space for this fall staple. “Boot-leg is the new silhouette,” she says. “Meet your new skinny jean!” Here, fourteen women who work at Vogue highlight their favorites.
