Item of the week: Blazing Star Pants

Nothing screams summer like a pair of easy, breezy pants.  We all tend to keep our bottoms neutral and stick to jeans, black pants, and khakis, but sometimes we need to mix it up.

Made of pure silk, these teal pants with all-over leaf pattern are just what the wardrobe doctor ordered.  I love how the gathered seaming on the legs controls the volume of the pants on the way down and ensures a flattering fit.  The ruffle by the drawstring waist adds an extra bit of whimsy.

These are perfect for casual beachy days and nights; pair them with a simple white tank, flip flops and whatever jewelry you feel like throwing on.  Scoop these up at Neiman Marcus ($298)… happy shopping!

5 Minutes with Zanete Auzina

Zanete Auzina hails from Latvia, and is a graduate of the Riga Design Art School for fashion design and the Baltic International Academy for advertising design.  Auzina worked in and with the fashion industry for many years before establishing her own line.  She feels that fashion has given her the chance to express her personality in one of the most amazing professions in the world.

According to Auzina, her inspiration comes from the beauty in the world, life, culture, and current events and developments.  Her silhouettes are modern and unique, and the line exudes luxurious sophistication and drama.

Her creations are versatile; I can imagine women in many different age ranges embracing this line.  The designer has already shown her collections in Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Russia, France, Germany, Austria, and Japan.

N’kya Design Spotlight

N’kya, a new line created by London based designer Sheila Boateng, has all the sass and sexiness any one could ask for. Created in London but deeply rooted in Ghana, each collection has its own personality. Originally a Biomedical Science major at Kingston University in the UK, Boateng realized her real passion when she began designing dresses for people to attend events such as the Ghana Independence celebration. Her favorite season to design for is Spring since the vibrancy of the line can truly come out to play. “Spring tends to be my favourite as African prints are mostly colorful and everyone gets into a happier mood in spring as it marks the end of the cold days and the beginning of sunshine.” She believes her confidence is a reflection in her work; short dresses and strapless tops in bold colors and patterns really bring out a bold, confident woman.

Her favorite designers include Viktor and Rolf and Gareth Pugh — her reasoning; “These designers tend not to follow trends making their stuff stand out and be unique,” most definitely a quality she can share with these designers. All of her pieces are produced in Ghana by highly skilled seamstresses. This generates a stable income and enables Boateng to give back to the people she gathers inspiration from. Being somewhat new to the fashion industry, she understands the competition is fierce. “You need to keep ahead of the game at all times and find a niche that makes you stand out when compared to other designers.” In five years from now she visions N’kya to be a successful, well known fashion house. “I see N’kya to be a fashion house known all over the world with stores in very fashion savvy cities such as New York, London, Paris, Milan, Dubai and my city of origin Accra.”

Fashion Inspiration: Walt Disney’s The Little Mermaid

This week, I’m going to show you how to get the look from one of the most beloved Disney films of all time: The Little Mermaid.

1. Under the Sea

The first outfit is based on Princess Ariel in her mermaid state. The purple bandeau bikini top is similar to her seashell top, and the green cover-up shorts are the same color as her fins. You can put the shell bracelet and starfish shoes in the adorable tote if you decide to go for a swim.

2. Dinner with the Prince

For Ariel’s first dinner with Prince Eric, she wears a lovely pink and white dress with puff sleeves. When given a fork, she calls it a “dinglehopper” and thinks that its function is to brush hair. The outfit I put together is a little pink dress with slightly puffed sleeves, and super feminine accessories. I also included earrings in the shape of a fork and knife, bringing to mind the “dinglehopper” incident.

3. Kiss the Girl

For a day out on the town with Prince Eric, Ariel wears a casual blue outfit. While wearing this outfit, she comes so close to getting him to kiss her; her friend Sebastian the crab even sings a song to convince Prince Eric to kiss her. The outfit I chose is a casual patterned corset top, navy skirt, and sky blue cardigan.  I also included a bow headband, similar to the large bow Ariel wears, and crab earrings.

4. The Little Mermaid

Even though Ariel ultimately chooses to live as a human, most people think of her as a perpetual mermaid. Although she isn’t shown wearing lavish outfits, you can still get inspiration from her mermaid look for an outfit that is appropriate to wear places other than the beach or pool.

I chose this beautiful mint green dress with flowy sleeves because it is the same color as her fins and reminds me of the sea.  I added a few touches of purple, like her top, in the shoes and flower hair accessory.  The necklace is similar to the shell necklace in which Ursula keeps Ariel’s voice.
