Julia Clancey, Designer: A tFS Exclusive Interview

The Brits are known for their mastery of the witty double entendre and their fashion-forward sensibility, but not necessarily both qualities at the same time.

Julia Clancey is one designer who combines contemporary looks of fantasy and romantic whimsy with a twisted sense of cheeky humor. (Just go to her website, and you will see what I am talking about.)

Never taking herself too seriously, Julia believes that fashion should be fun, and that a little frothy abandon is good for the temperament.

Since debuting her collection at London Fashion Week in 2004, Julia has been setting red carpets and award shows on fire with the likes of Paris Hilton, Megan Fox, and Lindsay Lohan flaunting her designs.

With editorials in Vogue, Elle and W, Julia Clancey is proving the she is the go-to designer for statement pieces that wow and pop.

Timo Weiland Profile: Designer

It’s not everyday you see a 20-something guy in an ascot—Chuck Bass excluded. So when Timo Weiland and Alan Eckstein first met and each was sporting a version of the formal Edwardian necktie, the connection was instantaneous. They debuted a unisex collection of neckwear in the fall of 2009 (this spring marked their first full-fledged ready-to-wear line) and immediately found a niche on the set of Gossip Girl. In fact, their bow ties started making cameos on the show even before they hit the sales floors at Barneys and Takashimaya. Just don’t ask the designers which characters wore them: “We’re so busy that we’ve never actually seen an episode,” says Weiland. (For the record, it was Chuck and Blair.) He and Eckstein do, however, find time for cinema. They cite Gangs of New York and Great Expectations as inspirations, and lately a new muse has come onto their radar. “Carey Mulligan,” says Weiland. “We loved her in An Education. Her character was so effortlessly sophisticated and chic, yet she was only seventeen. That’s the way we see our girl.” Eckstein adds: “She’s someone who appreciates the art of dressing.” And you can’t put an age on that.

Galliano’s Perfect Issy

JOHN GALLIANO hasn’t decided who could best play Isabella Blow in the in the soon-to-be-made biopic.

“It’s a tough job,” he told us. “She’ll have big shoes to fill. It needs to be someone who captures the essence of Issy, who understands who she was and what she meant to everyone that knew her. She’ll also need to grasp Issy’s innate sense of style and how she represented the industry. I can’t think of anyone at the moment. I do like the idea of her being played by three different people at various different stages of her life.”

Galliano, who counted himself as a close friend of Blow, denied rumours he is to feature as himself in the film.

“That’s all just talk,” he commented. “Nothing is confirmed – it’s still in the very early stages.”

The designer, who is acting at chairman of Fashion Fringe at Covent Garden this year and unveiled his three chose finalists on Friday, has dressed some of the world’s most glamorous women – including Charlize Theron and Gisele – but he described one actress as his ultimate muse.

“Dressing Liz Taylor was incredible,” he said. “Unfortunately I didn’t get to meet her but it gave me a real buzz to see her wearing my clothes. She is the ultimate Galliano girl.”

Graduate fashion week: Epsom BA graduate show

Racing fans link Epsom with the Derby. But at the weekend, there was another reason, apart from the legendary 1 mile, 4 furlong, 10 yard race, to cheer.

Epsom’s University College of the Arts fielded a 21-strong team of final-year BA students at Graduate Fashion Week. And this was far from being a one-horse race.

The show was a dance through the decades, featuring every inspiration from Marlene Dietrich-look, WW2 tailoring to PVC and gingham dresses accessorized with twinkling LED goggles and ‘brother-creeper’ lace-up shoes, and futuristic A-line shifts with ‘circuit-board’ decoration.

Katie Barret’s vigorous menswear, emphasized pleated kilt and hairy knits, with a bare-chested ‘Braveheart’ wearing his long kilt over red trousers. Kirsty Draper used strategically-placed circular, garter-style drawstrings to create unusual volume and silhouette in her primary-coloured collection. Alice Halliday used the strains of ‘Ave Maria’ to set the scene for her monastic robes, and nun-like capes over crystal-embellished dresses. But we could have done without the facial restraints.

Graduate Fashion Week, sponsored by River Island, the largest student event of its type in the world, continues today (Monday, June 7th), with shows by Ravensbourne, Kingston, Birmingham & Salisbury, Northbrook & Salford, UCA Rochester, and the first-ever international catwalk show featuring collections by students from universities and art colleges in St Petersberg, Singapore, Basle, Munich, and Amsterdam.

The campaign was photographed by Mikael Jansson. The four hunks in trunks continue Calvin Klein’s muscular reputation for mixing pecs and sex appeal. Previous under-cover stars for the brand have included the footballer, Freddy Lindberg, Dijimon Hounsou of The Gladiators and Black Diamond fame, and Travis Fimmel, the good ‘ol country boy-turned-male model, from the Australian Outback.
