‘Electric Erin’ O’Connor switches on for new Vauxhall

Supermodel Erin O’Connor dazzled on Chelsea Bridge last night in a bespoke electrical cocktail dress, especially created by the fashion designer, William Tempest. The ‘Erin Electric’, as the dress has been dubbed, was made by Tempest to celebrate the Ampera, Vauxhall’s new electric car.

Tempest’s sparkling design contained 200 light-emitting diodes and 1,000 Swarovski crystals. O’Connor has long been a supporter of all things green, and, with her glittering fashion credentials, she was the perfect face (and body) for the collaboration.

The Vauxhall Ampera, which is driven by an electric motor, will go on sale in the UK in early 2012 (the electric dress is a one-off).

Britney Spears Designs for Candie’s

Britney Spears is cementing her image as a good girl gone bad — and back to good — with her newest role as a fashion designer for the all-American department store Kohl’s.

The retailer will unveil on Thursday a limited edition, co-branded collection from Candie’s, and Spears, who, over the past couple years, has rehabilitated her image from that of a head-shaving, umbrella-wielding, Kevin Federline-divorcing basket case back into a chart-topping pop star who sold out arenas in her highly successful 2009 “Circus” concert tour.

Iconix Brand Group, which owns Candie’s, tapped Spears last year as the face of the brand, capitalizing on the singer’s comeback from tabloid purgatory as her “Circus” album reached number one and Spears added two more chart-topping singles to her discography, “Womanizer” and “3,” the latter an ode to threesomes. Despite Spears’ checkered image, Kohl’s and Candie’s are betting she can lure her legions of fans — this summer she became the first person ever to reach five million Twitter followers — into stores to buy the new Britney for Candie’s sportswear, handbags and jewelry collections.

Rad Or Bad? Would You Wear Touristy Hawaiian Prints

Besides the folks that live in the Magical Kingdom, we feel as if we Manhattanites see more tourists per day than anyone else. And though we might get peeved when our walk home gets impeded by some slow-walking, camera-wielding out-of-towners, that’s not to say that we hold any grudges. In fact, we’ve been taking some style cues from the wide-eyed sightseer, in the form of Hawaiian-printed shirts, skirts, and dresses we’ve culled from thrift shops and within our own closets.

Today’s barnyard beauty

It’s a familiar shoot concept but one that’s always welcome: haystacks, milk bottles and rustic white petticoats. In this particular example featuring Dioni Tabbers there’s the addition of spring jonquils, daisies and side braids, and while there’s no little lambs to be seen (refer to Anja with lamb and Eniko with lamb) we do get a cute little piglet.

Chris Benz’s Resort ’11 Is Uptown With An Edge

While the menswear-inspired clothing trend doesn’t seem to be dying anytime soon, Chris Benz’ resort ’11 collection reminds us of exactly why being a girl is so much fun. Inspired by the Californian mid-century sculptor Sascha Brastoff, whose social milieu included the likes of Carmen Miranda, Benz ditches his NYC stomping grounds to re-imagine the ’50s Los Angeles woman while maintaining his signature Benz twist.

Ultra-elegant tweed jackets, delicately draped organza tops and quirky two pieces that pack a punch give this collection incredible depth while high-contrast Brastoff-printed slim suits give us a dose of the quirky flair that Benz always has up his sleeve.

Peep Solange Knowles’ Inspired Style

We recently started seeing Solange Knowles at our favorite bands’ gigs, rocking couture bunny ears, a luxe turban, and shoes so awesome, we could barely pay attention to the music—and the more we got to know the singer, the more we fell in love with her songs, her perspective, and—of course—her sensational style.

Though she might have a super-famous older sister with whom she shares her Aphrodite-like looks and virtuoso voice, she’s definitely her own woman through-and-through. A mother, a sister, a daughter, an artist, musician, writer, and singer.

Solange wears many hats, and channeled a bit of love from each of them to create her third studio album, to be released later this fall. We met up with Solange at The Standard Hotel to gain a little insight into how she maintains her inspired style.

Who are your style heroes?

“My mom in the ’70s and ’80s! She was a bad bitch. Sex and the City totally jacked her steez on the camels. I have a pic of her on a camel ride in Egypt in the ’80s serving the hell out of that desert! Also, Diana Ross, The Fela Kuti Queens, Björk, ’70s-era Chaka Khan, Chloë Sevigny, ’90s Erykah Badu.”

What’s your secret style weapon?

“Shoes! I’m all about the shoes! I order a ton of them online and play with my entire wardrobe until I find the right shoe. Unfortunately, so many people get it right from the head until the ankles. The shoe is very important. I can’t even fuck with you if your shoe game is slacking.”

Emily Weiss is OBSESSED: L’Oréal ProPerfect Airbrush

The name is a mouthful, but after a few days of using L’Oréal’s new Sublime Bronze ProPerfect Salon Airbrush Self-Tanning Mist, you’ll be hanging on every word.

I must admit that self-tanner is one beauty arena I’ve been hesitant to explore, let alone fully embrace. Despite its obvious health merits, my few experiments with it have always left a bad taste in my mouth. The stickiness and stinkiness have simply never seemed worth the fleeting results. And let’s not even get into the panic that sets in while trying to achieve an even application.

So, during a Vogue accessories shoot, I was pleasantly surprised to hear from none other than L’Oréal ambassador Doutzen Kroes that she swears by their Sublime Bronze range. Fast-forward to a CVS store later that weekend, and Doutzen’s sun-kissed likeness staring at me from an in-store billboard. How could I resist that kind of endorsement? The blow-horn-like nozzle of the ProPerfect Airbrush bottle seemed terrifyingly intense, but convincingly innovative.

The balanced mini dress

As Melbourne leaves my teeth chattering through the city’s coldest June day in over a decade, Mr. Newton offers up a perfectly balanced mini dress (teasing, but not revealing) and will leave many a fashioniser currently living through Winter 2010 to look forward to the potential of Spring 2010*.
